One-Minute Operas aims to forge innovative pathways for LU students, enabling them to interact with and appreciate Kunqu Opera—a treasure of UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage—through Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI), Music Technology, and storytelling. One-Minute Operas consists of four phases: Phase 1: Prototype. A prototype of this project, designed by Kurzynski/Bertelli, will be showcased during WBLMP’s International Day (20/9/24). Phase 2: Storytelling & Libretti. Students are presented with a general introduction to the Kunqu Opera offered by an external consultant. They also gain access to a curated selection of Kunqu Opera scripts. Through a fine-tuned GenAI language model, they produce new libretti about topics of their choice. Phase 3: Music. Students use text-to-audio and data-to-MIDI to create short music loops, representing core operatic musical concepts like dialogue, conflict, and mystery. Students collect said loops in a freely accessible web-based loopstation. Phase 4: Outreach. LU students present their Operas in a fixed format (one-minute length) and interactive sample-pad format, during lecture time. They will be given feedback and further guidance from the consultant. . One-Minute-Operas aims to blend GenAI with cultural heritage, sparking student creativity and collaboration. By exploring AI in text and music, participants will deepen their appreciation of traditional culture through technology, enhance digital literacy, and foster teamwork. Our goal is to empower students to co-create, share their narratives, and contribute to a global dialogue on heritage and innovation, making cultural appreciation an act of observation and a dynamic, participatory experience.
