One of the major problems faced by students in data science is the confinement of knowledge to a classroom setting and examinations. This proposal aims to integrate a global datathon into the course CDS 4003 Project, providing an opportunity for students to integrate their knowledge, gain hands-on experience and see an application to a real and critical challenge. Furthermore, students will be allowed to use DeepSeek and ChatGPT to assist problem-solving and encouraged to master these latest advancements to increase their GAI competency. This datathon is hosted by Women in Data Science (WiDS) Worldwide, which started at Stanford University and has grown into a global initiative. WiDS Datathon challenges are based on well-curated, real-world datasets, and participant teams are required to have at least 50% women. In addition to solving impactful problems, students can develop their skills in teamwork and project management, which are essential for their future careers. They will gain an awareness of DEI (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion) by joining a global community of students in data science, broadening their perspectives as a global citizen. We will also invite industry partners to speak about their data science careers and provide networking opportunities for students.
