Lingnan University is actively preparing for the age of artificial intelligence (AI), and automation is the foundation of AI technologies. CLD9031 course aims to introduce students to fundamental knowledge in the field of automation and demonstrate how automatic control impacts daily life through classroom experiments, following the core idea of “learning by doing”. However, students show limited capability of programming and insufficient understanding of how code/programs influence the physical world. They have difficulties in employing critical automation concepts to describe real-life or academic problems. This project aims to enhance students' automation literacy in the age of AI; strengthen students' ability to independently solve problems in unfamiliar areas; deepen students’ understanding of how code/programs impact the physical world; improve students' learning experience on an experiment-dominated course; and extend the outcome of CLD9031 to more students in LU. We plan to improve the course from: (1) Hardware: developing more reliable (tolerant to fault operations) experimental platforms with supporting more experiments; (2) Software: developing easier-to-use programming package to reduce students’ fear of programming; (3) Teaching: constructing an error knowledge graph to allow students handle the errors themselves; and (4): Experiment: hiring qualified TA/RA to improve the student-to-instructor ratio better than 15:1.
